So who am I?
It’s always tough to begin describing one’s self, but I’ll start off with the basics. As you may have guessed, my name bares an authentic glimpse into my ethnicity. On September 7 of 1996, they called me Lorenzo as soon as I entered the world in Lecco, Italy. I was holding pasta in one hand and meatballs in the other....HA just kidding! But I do savour a good cajun chicken penne!
Anyways, within a few months, my parents found a home in Abbotsford, British Columbia, where I grew up alongside two beautiful younger sisters, Lezley and Lyzandria. We have adventured into two new homes since our first one, and are currently all living in Abbotsford.
All three of us siblings took up musical performing arts with intense passion and commitment. While my primary instruments of choice were the piano and drums, I also dabbled around with the guitar and cello.
Meanwhile, my sisters were both equally committed to the piano, and between both of them, our home was filled with the sounds of a trumpet, french horn, tuba, and sousaphone. To say the least, there was never a silent moment. But not to worry. We were all used to it and heavily invested. Besides, our parents came from musical backgrounds too, which likely explains our natural inclination towards all things musical.
By 2007, I was becoming increasingly aware of technology and it’s ability to record musical ideas. Many times after school, I would ask to get dropped off at the local Best Buy for an hour or two, where I would drool over the MacBook Pro’s that were on display. No, I did not literally drool over them. But I went so often over a span of a couple years that a few friendly employees even recognized me as a regular!
Heavily motivated, I joined the work force officially — yes, as a paper delivery boy (if that counts). I took to the grind for a little over a year and by 2010, I finally had saved enough money to purchase my dream computer — a maxed out MacBook Pro with Logic Pro.
This was the beginning of a massive yet unknown musical journey. It was an opportunity to expand the outlet of creativity that encompassed all of my thoughts. Funny enough, my younger self really didn’t understand the scale or depth to which this opportunity could unfold. The expansive possibilities simply loomed in front of a curiously unaware boy.
Self taught, I learned and experimented with Logic Pro as fast as I could, constantly experiencing breakthrough revelations as I discovered how to create and control sounds that I could hear in my head. It was all very new and exciting, and kept me occupied in my spare time. As I became more familiar with Logic Pro, the more fun I had composing, and so on and so forth, it became a contagious hobby of mine — one that would devour countless hours over the next several years.
When people discover my passion for writing music, they often ask me what my genre is, and I always struggle to answer that question. To elaborate why this is, I must tell you that my philosophy seeks to justify all genres, claiming that there is good music in every flavour and style. In line with this, I’ll listen to and enjoy songs from pretty much every genre under the sun... if they’re ‘good,’ that is. So it’s not a surprise that I have attempted to compose in an unusually high variety of genres.
However unabashedly, if you were to look at my Apple Music Replay stats, Taylor Swift takes first, second, third and fourth place by a land slide. Hans Zimmer falls in after her, and then everything else just sits in a more balanced fashion. So yes, I definitely am drawn to a specific sound.
My compositions will generally attempt to mix a unique blend of electronic pop with a smothering of orchestral flavours. I then slow cook it with intricate rhythmic sounds and serve with a heavy side of either dramatic or soothing melodies. Then again, I just do whatever I hear in my head, and THAT...could be anything.
Fast forward to today. I’ve now composed several hundred songs, most of which are incomplete because I have a certain proclivity — moving on to other ‘great ideas’ before the preceding one is done. It’s kind of a cyclical habit that leaves me with lots of unfinished work, and it’s a habit I’d like to change. Most of my compositions are structured without lyrics, because that is what comes most naturally to me, allowing me to focus on creating more complex melodies and rhythms. More and more though, I’m engaging the notion of writing music with lyrics.
Starting with ‘Sunrise’, I’m officially releasing my first single on popular platforms. I see it as a sort of symbolic illustration of what’s to come. I’ve long awaited the day that I would share my music with the world, and this marks the point where the sun is beginning to rise above the peaks, materializing into a beautiful landscape of colour and brightness.
As time permits, I am working to chip away at the unfinished collection of music that I’ve garnered, so that I can share these pieces with the world. This website will be the home of all future releases and announcements, so be sure to check in every now and then to see what’s up.
It’s an exciting journey for me, and I hope that my compositions will quite literally be music to your ears.
